I created this wrap around book jacket for a novel, the publisher was Penguin books. I employed a looser style to this painting. The art director let me interpret the scene for this book. Most art directors did leave the concept to the artist. They wanted something tropical to go with the story line. I looked at quite a few pictures of tropical settings on travel brochures and these photos inspired this image.  Most times when the book is printed the publishers give the illustrators a few printed covers. I believe I still have a printed cover of the book in my portfolio.  Lots of artists just like mixing water into their acrylics to thin them, and that's a good way, but I used Matte medium instead. I did this for 2 reasons, 1 the paint flow suits me and 2 reproduction purposes. I like the way it slows the drying down a bit and the fluid quality that it gives to the paint. Also, it gives a flat finish and this makes it easier for the publisher to make a photo of it for reproduction purposes.  There will be no glossy or hot spots on the final transparency.
