As you can see, this was a night scene and it follows the true facts of the story. I applied some quick washes of dark colours to get rid of the stark white canvas first. Then once the paint was dry, I did a pencil drawing over top and started in with light colours to help me see the shape of the ship. I had some photos of the ship as reference for it's details. The ship was firing on the enemy at the same time the enemy fire upon her. This and several other paintings I created for a book for National Geographic.
